Oh man! I'm over 50% through the Bible! I'm surprised (to be honest) that I stuck with it this long!
I am using a Bible reading plan from the YouVersion app called "Reading God's Story" if you are interested. It's a chronological reading plan...so I'm reading the story sort of in order. I like it.
Because we aren't really going in order of the books, we are sort of jumping around....we have done the Kings and Chronicles, with breaks to read the Psalms, Proverbs, Song of Songs, and Ecclesiastes. I'm sort of glad it broke up those history books a bit.
So here is what God has been teaching me in the last couple of months:
- Details matter. I think I may have said it before, but as I was reading about Solomon building the temple, there were tons of details. Details that mattered. And let me tell you, if God cared that there were 20 golden pomegranates in the temple, He surely cares about the details of my life too. And your life!
- God is about love AND justice. That one is tough sometimes. We want to picture the warm fuzzy God who pets baby lambs and hugs kids.
However, when there is judgement to be served, God dishes it out. Nowadays, that overall judgement is paid by Jesus. He was the sacrifice for us. But, God is still giving us consequences of our sins because He loves us. I don't have kids yet, but I imagine its that sort of parental, I love you so I'm-going-to-use-this-opportunity-to-teach-you thing.
- Song of Songs is a bit strange (who wants their teeth to appear like goats to their lover) but it is also quite saucy. Glad to know God condones that sort of stuff. :)
- Obedience is totally worth the struggle. There are days (weeks even) when I struggle to wake up early and take time to read. However, on those days I am often the most blessed by my reading...or I encounter things in my day that being grounded in God really helps me.
